The map

About this Verl map poster

Verl lies in the district of Gütersloh in North Rhine-Westphalia, on the level land of East Westphalia. It has no single dense centre. Instead it is made up of several former villages, among them Kaunitz and Sürenheide, linked by roads across farmland. On a map it looks like a loose group of settlements rather than one compact block.

The land between them is typical of the region, with scattered farmsteads, small woods, straight field boundaries and slow streams crossing the plain. Newer residential streets fill the gaps with the curving layouts of post-war housing. Large industrial estates sit at the edges, and their broad rectangular footprints stand out clearly from above.

The estates reflect Verl's strong manufacturing base, which includes the headquarters of the automation firm Beckhoff and the kitchen maker nobilia. A Verl map poster shows how a rural pattern of farms and villages has absorbed modern industry while keeping its open, spread-out character. In black and white, fields, streams and factory halls carry equal weight.

01

Dispersed villages

Several former village centres sit apart from one another across the plain. Each has its own small cluster of streets, and rural roads through the fields connect them.

02

Industrial estates

Large manufacturing sites on the town's edges appear as broad rectangular blocks, in sharp contrast to the fine texture of the farmland and housing nearby.

03

Farmstead landscape

Isolated farms, hedges and patches of woodland are scattered across the open land between the villages, giving the poster a gentle, even pattern.
