The map
Villa Altagracia lies in San Cristóbal province, in the hilly country northwest of Santo Domingo. The town stretches along the valley of the Haina River, and the Autopista Duarte, the main highway linking the capital with the north of the country, passes right alongside it. On the map, the settlement follows the road and river, forming a long, fairly narrow shape.
The hills around the valley are steep and green, and small roads climb into them toward farms and villages. For much of the twentieth century, the town was closely tied to a sugar mill, and its history reflects that industry. Today its position on the highway makes it a stopping point between the capital and the Cibao region.
A Villa Altagracia map poster captures a town shaped by movement: the highway, the river and the roads branching into the hills. In black and white, the long lines of road and water guide the eye through the layout, and the side streets fill in the valley floor. It is a clear, simple portrait of a town between the hills.
The Autopista Duarte runs past the town in a long line. It forms the main axis of the map and links the town with Santo Domingo.
The river winds through the valley beside the town. Its curves soften the straight lines of the highway and main streets.
Smaller roads climb out of the valley into the surrounding hills. They give the edges of the map a winding, irregular pattern.
