West Chester is the county seat of Chester County, Pennsylvania, west of Philadelphia. Its core is a tight, regular grid of streets, laid out in the early nineteenth century around the intersection of High Street and Market Street, where the Chester County Courthouse stands.
The courthouse, a Greek Revival building designed by Thomas U. Walter, who later worked on the dome of the United States Capitol, anchors a historic district of brick houses and storefronts. To the south, West Chester University occupies a large campus whose quads and buildings form a distinct area within the borough's fabric.
