Te mapa
Abeokuta, capital of Ogun State, takes its name from the Yoruba for under the rock. The Egba people founded it around 1830 as a refuge, settling beneath Olumo Rock, a granite outcrop that still rises above the city. From above, the older quarters form a dense, irregular pattern of lanes around rocky high ground, with the Ogun River running through the city.
The city grew as a union of many Egba townships, which is why its map has several older centres rather than one. Abeokuta is also known for adire, the indigo resist-dyed cloth sold in its markets. It is the birthplace of the writer Wole Soyinka and the musician Fela Kuti, two of the best-known Nigerian cultural figures of the twentieth century.
An Abeokuta map poster gathers these elements into a single composition: the dense old core around the rock, the curve of the Ogun River, and the newer districts spreading along the main roads toward Lagos and Ibadan. It is a map with deep personal meaning for Egba families and for anyone who has climbed Olumo.
The granite outcrop that gave the city its name rises above the old quarters, a landmark around which the earliest streets were arranged.
The river winds through the city on its way south, a natural line dividing districts and crossed by bridges at key points.
Several historic Egba settlements merged to form the city, leaving a cluster of older, denser centres visible as tight knots of irregular streets.
