Aimorés Map Poster & Print

Aimorés lies on the eastern edge of Minas Gerais, beside the Rio Doce and close to the border with Espírito Santo. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets pressed between the wide river and the hills that rise behind it. A railroad follows the valley, and a bridge crosses the Rio Doce to the far bank.

The surrounding land is rolling and was largely cleared for pasture in the twentieth century. That makes one nearby project especially visible. Instituto Terra, founded by the photographer Sebastião Salgado and Lélia Wanick Salgado, has replanted a former cattle ranch outside town with Atlantic Forest. It has become a well-known example of large-scale restoration.

Sebastião Salgado was born in the municipality. An Aimorés map poster shows the town's modest grid, the broad sweep of the Rio Doce, the railway along it and the folded hills where forest is slowly returning.
