Te mapa
Al ‘Ayzarīyah lies just east of Jerusalem, on the far side of the Mount of Olives, where the ground begins to fall toward the Judaean Desert. On a map the town is a dense tangle of streets that follow the contours of steep hillsides. Houses step up and down the slopes. There are few straight lines apart from the main roads that cut across the town.
The town is the site of biblical Bethany, and its Arabic name comes from Lazarus. Pilgrims visit the traditional Tomb of Lazarus and the Church of Saint Lazarus, and the nearby mosque is also named after him. The old road from Jerusalem to Jericho passes through, and for centuries the town has been a stopping place on that route.
Its recent geography has been shaped by the separation barrier, which divides the town from Jerusalem and has lengthened journeys that were once short walks. An Al ‘Ayzarīyah map poster shows the town's streets and slopes as they are drawn today. For families from here, it holds a landscape of hills, lanes and long views east toward the desert.
Lanes wind around the slopes in tight curves, following the terrain rather than a grid. This gives the whole town a dense, organic texture on the map.
The historic core around the traditional Tomb of Lazarus, with the church and mosque nearby, is the oldest and most closely built part of the plan.
The main road east toward Jericho and the Jordan Valley leaves the town as a long, winding line. It descends into the open, empty ground of the desert.

Koteā ko Al ‘Ayzarīyah
Al ‘Ayzarīyah matters to Palestinian families from the town and its diaspora, and to Christian and Muslim pilgrims who know it as Bethany. A map of its streets keeps that sense of place close: a hillside town drawn simply and at a human scale.
