Al Bayḑā’ stands on the Jabal al Akhdar, the Green Mountain, a plateau above the Mediterranean coast of Cyrenaica that gets more rain than almost anywhere else in Libya. The city sits well inland from the sea on this upland. Farmland, scrub and patches of woodland surround it and give the region its name.
Much of the modern city was built in the mid-twentieth century, when King Idris made it a seat of government. The map shows broad avenues and regular districts alongside older quarters that grew without a plan. Omar Al-Mukhtar University occupies its own campus within the city, adding another large, clearly defined area to the plan.
The history here is long. The remains of ancient Balagrae, with its sanctuary of Asclepius, lie within the city, and the ruins of Cyrene are a short drive to the east. An Al Bayḑā’ map poster shows how modern streets were laid out over a very old landscape on the Libyan plateau.
