Amherst is a large town in Erie County, New York, spreading north-east from the Buffalo city line across flat, open ground. On a map it looks like a wide patchwork of residential subdivisions, curving cul-de-sacs, commercial strips and parks. Long straight roads such as the main east–west routes hold it together.
Water defines many of its edges. Ellicott Creek winds through the town, and Tonawanda Creek, which carries the Erie Canal here, forms the northern boundary. The historic village of Williamsville lies to the south-east.
