Te mapa
Anajás lies in the interior of Marajó, the vast island at the mouth of the Amazon in the Brazilian state of Pará. There is no road connection to the rest of the country, and most travel happens by boat along the rivers and channels that thread through the island. From above, the town is a small grid of streets pressed against the riverbank, with forest and wetland on every side.
The river is the town's main street in all but name. Its curves and side channels, called igarapés in the region, dominate the map, while the built area is compact and orderly, a handful of blocks set back from the waterfront. Beyond the edge of town the map thins out almost entirely, leaving the meanders and scattered riverside homes to carry the composition.
An Anajás map poster suits anyone with roots in Marajó, as well as those who have worked in health, education or research in the region. Marajó is often described as the largest fluvial and marine island in the world, known for its buffalo, its ancient ceramics and its seasonal floods, and this town shows how daily life there is organised around the water.
The town faces the river directly, with streets running down to the bank where boats arrive, the natural front door of a settlement without roads to the outside.
Winding channels loop through the surrounding forest, drawing curves and oxbows that give the poster an unmistakably Amazonian outline.
A few straight blocks form the urban core, a small patch of order set against the fluid lines of water and wetland all around it.

Koteā ko Anajás
Places reached only by river have a strong sense of identity, and people from them carry it wherever they go. A map of Anajás captures that relationship between town and water in a single, quiet image.
