Ashford lies in the Weald of Kent, where several branches of the Great Stour river come together. From above, the town centre is surrounded by a tight loop of road that once served as a one-way ring and was later reworked into a shared-space scheme. Inside it is a small, older core, while outside it the town spreads widely in every direction.
Ashford is a railway town at heart. Several lines converge here, and the station is a stop on the high-speed line to London. The rails, the M20 motorway to the north and the river corridors cut the map into distinct sectors, with newer housing estates forming curving roads and cul-de-sacs around the older streets.
