Athlone lies on the River Shannon in the Irish midlands, where the river forms the boundary between Leinster and Connacht. The town grew around a crossing point, and it is still defined by that. From above, the Shannon runs north to south through the centre, with the town spread on both banks and connected by bridges near the castle.
Just north of town the river widens into Lough Ree, one of the large lakes of the Shannon system. Athlone Castle guards the west bank at the crossing, and Sean's Bar nearby is often cited as one of the oldest pubs in Ireland. Canals, marinas and a railway bridge add further lines to the map.
An Athlone map poster shows a place built around water and movement. The Shannon forms a strong central axis, Lough Ree opens to the north, and the old streets gather tightly at the crossing. Newer estates and ring roads spread outward, framing the historic core.
The River Shannon runs through the middle of the town, with bridges and a weir marking the historic crossing between east and west.
North of Athlone the river widens into Lough Ree, a large lake with an irregular shoreline and islands that fill the top of the map.
The old streets near Athlone Castle form a compact core on the west bank, the densest and oldest part of the town.
