Aweil lies in the north-west of South Sudan, on the broad, low plains of the Bahr el Ghazal region. On the map, the town is a spread of streets and compounds on flat ground, with a few main roads leading out across open grassland. Seasonal waterways cross the surrounding land and flood widely during the rainy season.
It is the capital of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State and an important market town for the region. The railway line connecting Wau with Sudan passes through Aweil. It is one of the few rail links in the country, and it shows on the map as a long, straight line.
