Te mapa
Malakal is the main town of Upper Nile in South Sudan. It lies on the White Nile a short way downstream of the Sobat River confluence. The land here is almost perfectly flat, so on a map the river channel, its side branches and the seasonal wetlands shape the scene more than anything built. The town follows the east bank in a long, fairly narrow band.
Its streets form a loose grid that thins out as it moves away from the water. Beyond it, tracks cross open ground, and the pale texture of the floodplain fills the space that hills or suburbs would fill elsewhere. The river has always mattered most here: for generations, boats on the Nile linked Malakal to the north and south.
A Malakal map poster is sparse by nature, and that is what gives it character. The dark line of the Nile against wide empty ground draws the eye much as the real landscape does. It works well as a quiet, spacious composition for anyone who has lived or worked in the town, or whose family comes from the Upper Nile region.
The town stretches along the east bank of the White Nile, and the river's broad channel is the defining line of any map of Malakal.
Just upstream, the Sobat River joins the White Nile, adding a second waterway that branches across the flat terrain near the town.
Flat ground and seasonal wetlands surround the town, leaving wide open areas that give the poster a calm, spare layout.
