Baldwin is a borough in Allegheny County, just south of Pittsburgh. Its landscape is typical of western Pennsylvania: steep hills, narrow hollows and ridgelines. From above, this produces a road pattern of curves, loops and short dead-end streets that follow the terrain instead of a grid. Wooded slopes separate one cluster of houses from the next.
Baldwin is mainly residential, a mid-century suburb that grew as Pittsburgh expanded beyond the city limits. Its eastern side reaches toward the Monongahela River, whose valley long shaped the region's industry and transport. Many residents commute into the city along routes that wind down from the hills.
