Te mapa
Bassar lies in the Kara region of northern Togo, in hilly savanna country west of the Togo Mountains. From above, the town is a loose spread of compounds and streets around a small central area where the main roads meet. Beyond the edges, the land rolls away in low hills and ridges, with farmland, woodland and scattered villages between them.
The Bassar area is known for its long history of iron working. Iron ore from the surrounding hills was smelted here for centuries in clay furnaces, and the region was an important source of iron for West Africa. Traces of slag heaps and old furnace sites remain in the landscape. Today Bassar is also a regional centre for farming and trade.
A Bassar map poster shows a savanna town whose plan has grown gradually outwards from its crossroads. The composition is simple but expressive, a dense core, radiating roads and irregular edges fading into hills. It is a fitting portrait of a place with a distinctive industrial past.
The main roads meet near the centre of Bassar and give the town a clear focal point. Markets and public buildings cluster around it.
The hills around Bassar once supplied iron ore for traditional smelting. On the map they appear as open, lightly settled land around the town.
Residential quarters of family compounds and sandy lanes extend in all directions. They create an irregular, softly textured pattern around the core.
