Te mapa
Beira occupies a flat spit of land in central Mozambique, bounded by the wide estuary of the Púnguè River on one side and the open Indian Ocean on the other. From above, the coastline and the harbour dominate. The old commercial centre sits near the port, and residential districts stretch along the beach road towards Macúti and inland across marshy, barely raised ground.
The city's port is the start of the Beira Corridor, the rail and road route that links the sea to Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia. In 2019 Cyclone Idai made landfall close to Beira and caused severe damage across the city. Its low elevation makes water a constant presence on the map.
A Beira map poster is really a portrait of a shoreline. Ocean fills much of the frame, the estuary cuts in sharply, and the streets hold to the dry land in between. The contrast between open water and a clearly bounded city makes it one of the more striking coastal designs.
The Púnguè estuary widens as it meets the sea. Quays and rail yards line its shore, and this is where the corridor into the interior begins.
A long, fairly straight beach runs along the southern face of the city towards Macúti, with a coastal road tracing the edge of the land.
Inland, the built-up area gives way to marsh and flat ground crossed by channels, which shows how close Beira sits to sea level.

Koteā ko Beira
For people from Beira, the shape of the point between river and ocean is instantly recognisable. A map honours a city that has been rebuilt more than once and is still anchored to its port.
