Te mapa
Kwekwe grew from gold. The town began as a mining settlement in the early twentieth century, when it was known as Que Que, and the mining past still shapes its layout. On a map the centre is a modest grid of blocks, while the edges break up into mine sites, workings and the scattered patterns of suburbs that grew around them.
The town sits roughly midway between Harare and Bulawayo, and the main road and railway between the two cities pass straight through it. These two lines form the spine of any Kwekwe map poster, running diagonally across the frame, with the Kwekwe River and its tributaries wandering more loosely across the gently rolling highveld.
Beyond the centre, residential areas spread out in distinct pieces rather than a single continuous mass. Some are orderly, with curving roads and regular plots; others are denser and more improvised. In monochrome, those differences become part of the texture of the print, a record of how a small mining camp turned into one of the main towns of the Midlands.

Around the edges of town, former and active gold workings leave irregular clearings and access tracks, a reminder that Kwekwe began as a mining settlement called Que Que.
The river and its small tributaries curve across the plateau near town, the only soft, meandering lines in an otherwise straight-edged layout of roads and rail.

Koteā ko Kwekwe
Kwekwe is the kind of place people carry with them after they leave: a childhood town, a first job at the mines, a stop on the long road between two cities. A clean map of it is a calm reminder of that, without the need for photographs.
The title and subtitle can say whatever you like, from the old name Que Que to a family date, and the coordinates line can be adjusted too. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand to suit the room it will hang in.
