Te mapa
Mutare lies in a valley in Zimbabwe's Eastern Highlands, close to the border with Mozambique, and mountains surround it on almost every side. The centre is laid out on a neat colonial-era grid of wide streets and regular blocks. Around it, suburbs climb the lower slopes and spread along the valley floor, and the ridges form a natural frame.
The city grew as a gateway on the route between the interior and the port of Beira, and both the road and the railway still run through it on their way to the coast. Coming from Harare, travellers cross Christmas Pass before descending into the valley. To the south, the Bvumba mountains rise with forest and misty uplands.
A Mutare map poster captures a city shaped by its mountains. The orderly grid of the centre sits inside an irregular ring of hills, and the transport lines thread out through the gaps. It is a strong, contained composition, well suited to a larger print.

The main road and the railway pass through Mutare on their way to Beira in Mozambique. On the map they are strong lines leading toward the eastern border.
Northwest of the city, the road from Harare winds over Christmas Pass before dropping into the valley. It is a curving line through the high ground.

Koteā ko Mutare
Mutare leaves a lasting impression, with its mountain setting, border-town energy and cool highland air. A poster of its grid inside the hills is a good way to remember a childhood, a school or the gateway to the Eastern Highlands.
