Te mapa
Bulawayo has one of the most distinctive city centres in southern Africa. Its streets were laid out at the end of the nineteenth century in a strict grid. They were made unusually wide, a design often explained as allowing a full span of oxen to turn a wagon. On the map the centre reads as a clean chessboard of large blocks.
East of the centre lie Centenary Park and Central Park, a green belt that separates downtown from the suburbs. Further out the residential areas become low and spread out, with larger plots and gently curving roads. The high-density townships to the west have a tighter, more regular pattern.
The city's name comes from the royal settlement of the Ndebele king Lobengula, and Bulawayo is still called the City of Kings. To the south lie the granite hills of Matobo. A Bulawayo map poster shows one of the clearest planned grids on the continent.

Centenary Park and Central Park form a green area east of downtown. It separates the business district from the suburbs beyond.
Low-density suburbs with curving roads to the east and tighter townships to the west give the map two different textures around the centre.
