Te mapa
Berdychiv lies in Zhytomyr Oblast in central-western Ukraine, on the banks of the Hnylopiat, a small river that winds through the town. On the map the historic centre is drawn around this water, with streets running up from the banks. A looser grid of later blocks then extends across the flatter land on either side, giving the town a broad, spreading outline.
Its most striking feature is the Carmelite monastery, a fortified complex on a rise above the river whose walls still appear as a solid, angular footprint among the surrounding streets. For centuries Berdychiv was a major trading town and home to one of the largest Jewish communities in the Russian Empire, and the density of its older quarters reflects that commercial past.
Two literary names are tied to the town. Joseph Conrad was born here in 1857, and Honoré de Balzac married Ewelina Hańska in the Church of St Barbara in 1850. A Berdychiv map poster tells none of these stories directly, but the river bend and the monastery walls make the place unmistakable to anyone who knows it.
The river winds through the centre in soft curves, dividing the town into two banks and giving the map a natural focal line across the paper.
The fortified monastery above the river prints as a compact, angular block, one of the few shapes on the map that was clearly built for defence.
Near the river the street pattern tightens into short, irregular blocks, a trace of the market town that grew here over several centuries.

Berdychiv matters to people with family roots in the region, including many descendants of its former Jewish community, and to readers of Conrad and Balzac. The map offers a quiet, factual portrait of the town that leaves room for each person's own associations.
