Bethel Park lies in the South Hills of Allegheny County, a short distance south of Pittsburgh. The terrain is hilly, and the street map reflects it. Roads bend around slopes and follow ridgelines, and residential loops and cul-de-sacs branch off longer collector roads. It is a very different pattern from the flat grids of the Midwest, and it gives the map an organic, hand-drawn look.
Along the southern side, South Park, one of Allegheny County's large public parks, adds a broad area of open space with its own curving drives. The Montour Trail, a long rail-trail built on a former railroad line, passes through the municipality, and Pittsburgh's light rail line reaches into the area, linking it with downtown.
