Te mapa
Bin Jawwād lies on the Libyan coast of the Gulf of Sidra, in the long stretch between Sirte and the oil terminals further east. On a map the town is a narrow settlement strung along the coastal highway, with the Mediterranean on one side and flat, dry land on the other. The simplicity of that arrangement is the whole image.
Here the built-up area is small: a handful of streets and plots running off the main road, some tracks leading inland, and a shoreline that stays fairly smooth for long distances. The town became known internationally during the 2011 conflict, when it came up repeatedly in reports about the fighting along the coast road.
A Bin Jawwād map poster is an exercise in minimalism. Most of the frame is open ground and water, with the highway as a single strong line and the town as a small, dense area on it. In black and white, that emptiness makes a restrained composition that is quite unlike a busy city map.
The main road along the Gulf of Sidra runs straight through the town and is by far the strongest line on the map.
The coast is long and gently curving, a clean boundary between the sea and the desert plain that shapes the whole composition.
Inland, the map is mostly empty space crossed by a few tracks, so the small settlement stands out very clearly against it.

A map of Bin Jawwād is a personal object: for families from the Sirte coast, for Libyans abroad, or for anyone with a connection to this stretch of the gulf. Its sparse lines make a calm, uncluttered piece for a wall.
