Te mapa
Bokajān lies in the Karbi Anglong district of Assam, close to the border with Nagaland and a short distance from Dimapur. The town sits where the Assam plains meet the hills of this part of the district. On a map it is a modest, elongated settlement strung along its roads and the railway line that passes through.
The town is known above all for its cement factory, set up by the Cement Corporation of India, which drew on limestone from the surrounding hills and made Bokajān an industrial centre in an otherwise rural district. Around it lie villages, farmland and forest, crossed by the roads that link the town to Dimapur and the rest of Assam.
A Bokajān map poster shows a place defined by transport and industry: the long lines of rail and road, the compact streets around them and the open land stretching into the hills. The composition is simple and direct, rendered with the clarity of a technical drawing, a portrait of a working town on the edge of Assam.
The railway passing through Bokajān draws a long, steady line across the map, one of the strongest features in a town that grew up along its transport routes.
The cement factory and its grounds take up a large, distinctive area near the town, a reminder of the industry that has defined Bokajān.
Hills and forest surround this part of Karbi Anglong, so the town's streets give way quickly to open country with scattered villages and winding tracks.
