Te mapa
Carahue sits on the Imperial River in Chile's Araucanía Region, about halfway between Temuco and the Pacific coast. The map shows a town divided by terrain. There is a lower district along the riverbank and an upper town on higher ground, joined by winding streets. The river is wide and slow here, and a bridge carries the main road across it.
The site has deep historical layers. Pedro de Valdivia founded the Spanish city of La Imperial here in 1551. It was abandoned half a century later during the Mapuche uprising, and the present town grew on the same ground in the nineteenth century. The surrounding land is still home to many Mapuche communities.
A Carahue map poster gains most of its character from the river. The Imperial's broad curve crosses the sheet, and the streets bunch up and climb away from it. Toward the west, the valley opens out on its way to the coast at Puerto Saavedra. The mix of water, slope and a small grid makes an unusually varied composition for a town of this size.
A wide river runs past the town on its way to the Pacific. It is the strongest shape on the poster and the reason the settlement was founded here.
The town is split between the riverside flats and the higher ground above. Streets bend and climb to link them, which breaks up the grid in an interesting way.
The bluff above the river was the location of Valdivia's La Imperial, founded in 1551. It was one of the earliest Spanish cities in southern Chile.

Koteā ko Carahue
Carahue speaks to people with family in the Araucanía, to those drawn to its long history, and to anyone who has followed the Imperial toward the coast. It is a river town with a clear, readable form.
Set your own title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps a family name or the year you left, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint emphasises the river and bridge with clean lines.
