Te mapa
Carmel lies just north of Indianapolis in Hamilton County, and its map has one feature you notice immediately: roundabouts. The city has built well over a hundred of them, more than almost any other place in the United States, replacing signalised crossroads with small circles at intersection after intersection. From above, the main roads look like strings of beads.
The Monon Trail, a former railway line converted into a walking and cycling path, runs north to south through the centre. Around it, Carmel has built a compact downtown with an arts and design district and the Palladium concert hall. The White River forms part of the eastern edge of the city.
A Carmel map poster shows a Midwestern suburb designed with intent. A grid of major roads divides the land into square sections, each filled with curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs, and roundabouts mark almost every crossing. The straight line of the Monon cuts through the middle.
Small circles mark junction after junction along the city's main roads, a distinctive pattern of loops that is Carmel's signature from above.
A former rail line turned walking and cycling path runs straight through the city, a clear line through the curving suburban streets.
The downtown around the Monon and the Palladium forms a denser cluster of streets, the walkable heart of an otherwise spread-out suburb.
