Chatra is the headquarters of Chatra district in northern Jharkhand, close to the border with Bihar. It sits on the edge of the Chota Nagpur plateau, and the map shows a compact town centre with roads radiating out across rolling, partly forested country and small agricultural villages.
The district has long been called a gateway to Jharkhand from the north, and the town's roads reflect that role: several routes converge here before heading on into the plateau.
