Te mapa
Chéngguān Qū is the central urban district of Lhasa, and on a map it lies on the flat floor of the Kyi Chu valley, surrounded by high, bare mountains. The Lhasa River runs along its southern side, divided by islands and sandbars. The newer districts form broad blocks, while the old Tibetan quarter around the Jokhang Temple is a small, dense knot of lanes. To the west the Potala Palace stands on its own hill.
The city sits at around 3,650 metres above sea level, one of the highest cities in the world. The Potala Palace, the former winter residence of the Dalai Lamas, and the Jokhang Temple are both UNESCO World Heritage sites. Around the Jokhang runs the Barkhor, a circular route walked clockwise by pilgrims, and a wider circuit called the Lingkhor once encircled the whole old city.
A Chéngguān Qū map poster shows the relationship between the sacred and the everyday. The old town's tight circle of lanes and the lone hill of the Potala stand out against the modern grid, while the river and the mountains frame everything in open space. It is a composition with unusual calm.
The palace rises on Marpo Ri, the Red Hill, west of the old city. On the map it is a distinct open shape surrounded by avenues and squares.
A ring of lanes around the Jokhang Temple, walked by pilgrims. It forms the densest, most intricate part of the map, clearly different from the newer streets.
The Lhasa River runs along the valley's southern side, spreading into braided channels and islands that give the map a soft, flowing lower edge.

Koteā ko Chéngguān Qū
Lhasa draws people who have made the long journey there, travellers who hope to one day, and those with personal ties to Tibet. The map records the city's pilgrim geography in a quiet, respectful way.
