Te mapa
Doilungdêqên is a district on the western side of Lhasa, in the valley of the Lhasa River, known in Tibetan as the Kyi Chu. On the map the geography is stark and simple. A flat valley floor carries roads and new neighbourhoods, braided river channels run through its centre, and steep, treeless mountains rise sharply on both sides. At well over 3,500 metres, it is one of the highest urban districts anywhere.
In recent years the district has absorbed much of Lhasa's westward growth, with new residential areas, institutions and roads following the valley. Beyond the town, it stretches into mountain country. Tsurphu Monastery, the traditional seat of the Karmapa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, lies in a side valley within the district.
A Doilungdêqên map poster is shaped entirely by its valley. There are straight roads along the floor, a wide, braided river and blank mountainsides that close in on either side. Printed in black and white, it has the spare, graphic quality of a high-altitude landscape.
The flat valley floor holds almost all the district's streets and buildings. On the poster it forms a long, narrow band of development running east towards central Lhasa.
The Lhasa River spreads into several shallow channels, with sandbars and islands between them. Its shifting pattern is one of the most intricate elements on the map.
Steep, bare slopes rise immediately on both sides of the valley. They leave large empty areas on the poster, emphasising how confined the town's footprint is.

Koteā ko Doilungdêqên
For people from Lhasa and for travellers who have crossed the Tibetan plateau, this map holds a rare landscape of valley, river and mountain. It hangs well where a calm, uncluttered image is wanted.
