Chengxi is a town district in eastern Chongqing municipality, in the hilly country of the eastern Sichuan Basin. The name means west of the city, and it describes a district that grew beside an older urban core. The terrain here is rarely level, and ridges and valleys decide where streets can run.
From above, newer roads push through in long, smooth curves, while older lanes follow the natural contours of the ground. Terraced fields and small bodies of water surround the built-up areas and create a patchwork texture that is typical of the Chongqing countryside. Blocks of apartments sit on flatter ground wherever it can be found.
