Te mapa
Chirundu stands on the northern bank of the Zambezi River, facing the Zimbabwean town of the same name on the opposite shore. It is one of the main road crossings between Zambia and Zimbabwe and a key link on the corridor between southern and central Africa. On a map, the town gathers around the approach roads to the bridges.
Two bridges span the river here: the Otto Beit suspension bridge from 1939 and a newer road bridge that now carries most traffic. Chirundu also became known for its one-stop border post, where both countries handle crossings at a single facility. Not far away the Kafue River joins the Zambezi, and downstream lie the Lower Zambezi and Mana Pools national parks.
A Chirundu map poster brings together the broad river, the bridges and the road climbing north towards Lusaka. It is a map about movement and connection, quiet in its lines and strong in meaning for anyone who has driven this route, worked at the border or lives along this stretch of the Zambezi.
The wide river sweeps across the map and forms the national border, dominating the composition and dividing the Zambian town from its Zimbabwean neighbour.
The historic suspension bridge and the newer road bridge cross the river side by side, two fine lines that show where the continent's traffic meets.
The main highway leaves the river and heads north, a long, purposeful line that shows Chirundu's role as a gateway into Zambia.
