Te mapa
Cô Tô sits near the southwestern edge of the Mekong Delta in An Giang, close to the Cambodian border. From above, the land is almost entirely flat and cut into long rectangles by irrigation canals. Roads follow the canal banks, and houses line them in thin strips. Only the mountain breaks this pattern, a rounded mass of contour lines standing on its own above the plain.
The mountain that shares the town's name belongs to the Bảy Núi, the Seven Mountains, a group of isolated granite hills that rise out of the delta in this corner of the province. On a map it shows up as a dark knot of shading and winding tracks surrounded by the very regular geometry of paddy fields. It is one of the few places in the region with real relief.
A Cô Tô map poster mostly records how people have organised water. The main canals run for kilometres without bending, smaller channels branch off at right angles, and settlements cling to the raised banks where the ground stays dry in the flood season. Printed in black and white, the town reads as a fine lattice of lines, with a single mountain set in the middle of it.
Cô Tô mountain is one of the granite hills known as the Seven Mountains. Its rounded outline and winding paths stand out sharply against the flat delta around it.
Long, straight irrigation canals divide the plain into regular fields, and the roads and villages follow their banks in parallel lines.
The town lies in the far west of the delta, where An Giang meets Cambodia and the rice plain begins to give way to scattered hills.
