Te mapa
Tân Châu lies in An Giang province on the Tiền River, one of the two main branches of the Mekong, close to where the river enters Vietnam from Cambodia. From above, water is the main feature. The broad river runs past the town, sandbar islands split the current, and a network of canals divides the surrounding farmland into long, narrow strips.
The town grew along the riverbank, so its streets run mostly parallel to the water, with short lanes leading down to landings and markets. Every year the Mekong flood covers much of the surrounding land, and the settlement pattern follows raised roads and dykes. On the map, these show up as long straight lines across the fields.
Tân Châu is best known for silk, and especially for a glossy black silk traditionally dyed with the fruit of the mặc nưa tree, which has been sold throughout southern Vietnam. A Tân Châu map poster shows the town's close relationship with its river: a narrow band of streets along wide water, with islands and canals continuing into the frame.
The wide Mekong branch dominates the map, running past the town with sandbar islands that split the current into separate channels.
The main streets run parallel to the river, with short connecting lanes leading down to the water, a linear pattern shaped by trade and boats.
Straight canals and dyke roads divide the flat farmland into long strips, a precise grid laid over the delta's floodplain.
