Te mapa
Long Xuyên lies on the western bank of the Hậu River, the Bassac branch of the Mekong, in the heart of the delta in southern Vietnam. It has long been a centre for the rice-growing and fishing districts of An Giang, and its map shows a city tied closely to water: river frontage, canals and flat, fertile land all around.
The centre stretches along the riverbank, with streets running parallel to the water and others leading inland along canals. Straight irrigation channels cut across the surrounding rice fields in long geometric lines. Across the river, large islands of farmland divide the Hậu into separate channels, giving the waterfront a layered look.
One of those islands, Ông Hổ, is associated with Tôn Đức Thắng, Vietnam's former president, whose childhood home is preserved there. A Long Xuyên map poster shows how canals, river and city interlock across the delta, a pattern of long straight lines and wide curving water that looks particularly clean in black and white.
The city lines the western bank of the broad Hậu River, with streets running parallel to the water and giving the map a strong flowing edge.
Straight irrigation canals run across the rice fields around the city, long ruler-drawn lines that are among the most striking features of any Mekong Delta map.
Across the water, islands such as Ông Hổ split the river into channels, adding layers of land and water opposite the city centre.
