Te mapa
Colombo is drawn by the sea. Its western edge is an almost straight line of coast along the Indian Ocean, broken in the north by the breakwaters of one of South Asia's largest ports. Just south of the harbour sits the Fort district, the old colonial core, and beyond it the long open strip of Galle Face Green follows the shore.
Inland, Beira Lake spreads in several irregular arms between the Fort, Pettah and Slave Island, a rare body of calm water in the middle of a dense commercial district. Main roads run parallel to the coast, with Galle Road carrying traffic south. To the north, the Kelani River bends toward the sea and marks the edge of the city.
Colombo is Sri Lanka's commercial capital, while the parliament sits in neighbouring Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, which is why the two cities appear side by side on regional maps. A Colombo map poster captures the contrast between the rigid coastline, the port geometry and the soft forms of the lake.
Long breakwaters enclose the harbour north of the Fort, forming sharp geometric lines that stand out against the natural curve of the shore.
The lake winds through the city centre in several branches, creating an open, irregular shape amid the tightly packed streets of Pettah and Slave Island.
A long open lawn between the road and the ocean, it appears on the map as a clean strip along the coast just south of the Fort.
