Te mapa
Kandy lies in the hills of central Sri Lanka, in a basin surrounded by green ridges. At its heart is Kandy Lake, an artificial lake created in the early nineteenth century by the last king of Kandy. Its long, calm outline is the first shape you notice on the map, with the old town's small grid sitting beside it.
On the lakeshore stands the Temple of the Tooth, one of Buddhism's most important shrines, which houses a relic of the Buddha. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings before British rule in 1815. Its sacred city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A Kandy map poster shows how closely terrain governs the city. The Mahaweli River loops around the town, while roads wind along valleys and around hillsides. Just downstream, the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya occupy a bend of the same river.
The lake beside the old town is the city's central landmark. Its smooth outline and the Temple of the Tooth complex on its shore anchor the whole composition.
Sri Lanka's longest river curves around Kandy in a broad loop. On the map it defines the city's edges and passes the Peradeniya botanical gardens.
Outside the small central grid, roads follow ridges and valleys in tight curves. The forested slopes between them leave large, quiet spaces on the page.
