Te mapa
Pita Kotte lies within Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, the legislative capital of Sri Lanka, just east of Colombo. From above, it is a dense area of winding streets and residential lanes, interrupted by patches of wetland and the waters of the Diyawanna lake nearby. The terrain is low and marshy, and water shapes the pattern of roads and settlement throughout.
Kotte was the capital of a Sinhalese kingdom in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and Pita Kotte, meaning outer Kotte, recalls the old layout of the royal city. Traces of ancient ramparts survive in the area. Today it is a busy residential and commercial district, closely connected to Colombo and to the nearby parliament complex on its island in the lake.
A Pita Kotte map poster brings together old and new: the irregular lanes of a historic settlement, the open water of the lakes and marshes, and the modern roads that link it to the capital. In black and white, the wetlands become soft, open areas that frame the dense streets and give the composition a calm, layered feel.
The area is filled with narrow, irregular streets that follow older paths and the edges of wetlands, creating a dense and intricate texture on the map.
The lake near Pita Kotte, with the parliament complex on an island, forms an open body of water that contrasts with the tight pattern of nearby streets.
Low, marshy land appears throughout the area, leaving irregular open spaces between neighbourhoods and shaping where roads and houses could be built.
