Compostela lies in the south of Nayarit, inland from the Pacific coast, in hilly country known for coffee and tobacco growing. Founded in the first decades of Spanish rule, it served for a time as the seat of the kingdom of Nueva Galicia before the capital moved to Guadalajara, a history that still shapes the orderly layout of its centre.
