Coonoor lies high in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu, and its map is full of contours. There are almost no straight lines. Roads loop around spurs, drop into ravines and climb back out, while the town's houses are spread across several ridges instead of forming one compact centre.
Tea estates surround the town, and on the map they appear as large open areas broken only by thin estate roads and streams. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing, climbs through Coonoor on its route to Ooty, and its line winds across the terrain beside the roads.
