Te mapa
Date lies in the northern part of the Fukushima basin, north of Fukushima city, with the Abukuma River running through it. On the map, it is a patchwork of town centres, villages and farmland rather than a single dense core, formed by the merger of several municipalities in 2006. Mountains rise on the edges of the basin.
The area is known for its fruit, especially peaches, and for anpo-gaki, a soft dried persimmon made in the region for generations. The city's name recalls the Date clan, the warrior family whose origins lie in this area before it rose to power in Sendai.
A Date map poster shows a rural Japanese landscape at close range. Small road networks around station towns, long lines crossing orchards and paddies, and the broad sweep of the river all come together in one frame. In monochrome, it becomes a study in how settlement fits into a working agricultural basin.
The Abukuma crosses the basin through the city, a broad, curving line that separates districts and draws the eye across the map.
Farmland and fruit orchards cover much of the land between settlements, shown on the map as open space crossed by a light network of rural roads.
Several former towns now form one city, so the map shows multiple small clusters of streets rather than a single centre, each with its own station area.
