Deal stretches along the east Kent coast between Sandwich and Dover, facing the English Channel. The shore organises its map: a long, straight seafront with parallel streets just behind it, and a grid of residential roads spreading inland. The old town, centred on Middle Street, keeps a tight network of narrow lanes and alleys close to the beach.
Deal Castle was built for Henry VIII in the late 1530s. Its rosette plan of curved bastions is striking even from above, and Walmer Castle lies just to the south.
