Te mapa
Debaltseve is a town in Donetsk oblast in eastern Ukraine, built around one of the region's most important railway junctions. On a map the railway is impossible to miss. Broad yards and diverging lines run through the town and divide it into separate residential areas, with open steppe and farmland beyond.
The town's position on the rail network made it strategically significant, and in early 2015 it was the site of heavy fighting during the war in eastern Ukraine. Since then it has been under Russian occupation. For many former residents it is a place they cannot currently return to.
A Debaltseve map poster records the town as it lies on the land: the long curves of track, the station area, and the grids of houses and apartment blocks on either side. Reduced to black lines, the map becomes a restrained and personal document, a way of keeping the shape of a home that is otherwise out of reach.
Several lines meet and fan out through wide yards at the centre of town. They form the dominant structure of the whole map.
Residential districts sit on either side of the tracks, linked by a small number of crossings. The result is a clearly segmented town plan.
Open, gently rolling farmland surrounds the town, with scattered villages and roads. It gives the map a wide, quiet margin.

Koteā ko Debaltseve
Many people displaced from the Donbas keep maps of their home towns as a way to remember the streets exactly as they were. This print is meant for that kind of quiet remembrance, without slogans or embellishment.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be personalised, for example with the name in Ukrainian or a meaningful date. Five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
