Desāīganj, widely known as Wadsa, lies in Gadchiroli district in the far east of Maharashtra, on the western side of the Wainganga River. The river is broad here, and on a map it forms a strong edge along one side of town, with sandbanks and channels shifting across its bed.
The town grew as a railway settlement, and the line running through it gives the plan its main axis. Streets lie on either side of the tracks, with markets and residential lanes spreading outward. Beyond the built-up area, rice fields give way to the forested country that covers much of Gadchiroli district.
