Wardha lies in the Vidarbha region of eastern Maharashtra, on the flat to gently rolling land of the Deccan plateau, not far from Nagpur. On a map, the town has a compact centre of dense streets, with railway lines crossing nearby and newer neighbourhoods reaching outward along the main roads.
The surrounding countryside is mostly agricultural, with fields and village roads spreading in all directions. The river that gives the town and district their name flows some distance away, so the town's map is defined less by water and more by roads, railways and the edge of the fields.
