Te mapa
Dianga is the county seat of Têwo (Diebu) County in the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of southern Gansu. It lies on the Bailong River, in the rugged mountain country where the Tibetan Plateau breaks down toward the Sichuan basin. The terrain decides almost everything about the town's shape.
From above, the town is long and narrow. Its streets are squeezed into the valley floor between the river and the steep slopes, so the main road and the river run side by side, with short cross streets and bridges linking the banks. Beyond the valley, there is almost nothing but mountain terrain and a few roads winding along the side valleys.
A Dianga map poster shows how a settlement adapts to a tight valley. The ribbon of streets and the curves of the river make a clear, elongated composition, one that looks striking in black and white because so much of the frame is empty mountainside.
The Bailong River runs through the centre of town, and most streets run parallel to it, making a strong linear axis across the poster.
Short streets and bridges cross the valley, linking the two sides of the town and forming a rhythmic pattern of small ladder-like connections.
Outside the town, a few roads snake up side valleys into the surrounding mountains, emphasising how isolated and steep the landscape is.
