Te mapa
East Lake takes its name from its position on the east side of Lake Tarpon, the large freshwater lake in northern Pinellas County, Florida. On a map the lake is the main event, a long body of water running north to south. The community spreads to its east in loops of residential streets, with cul-de-sacs branching off curving collector roads.
Development here mostly dates from the late twentieth century, and the street pattern shows it. Rather than a grid, neighbourhoods are drawn as self-contained pods, many built around golf courses whose fairways show up as broad, smooth ribbons between the houses. A main north–south arterial ties the pods together, and wetlands and preserved land break up the built area in places.
An East Lake map poster turns this into a clear composition: the broad shape of Lake Tarpon on one side and a dense field of looping streets on the other. In black and white, the cul-de-sacs read almost like a pattern of leaves, and the open water gives the design a strong edge.
The long shape of Lake Tarpon marks the western side of the community and gives the map its largest single form, a calm expanse of open space beside the dense housing.
Several neighbourhoods are laid out around golf courses, whose fairways appear as smooth, winding bands of open ground running between rows of curving residential streets.
Branching dead-end streets off looping roads make up much of the map, a typical Florida suburban layout that looks surprisingly decorative when drawn in fine black lines.
