Fenshui lies in the hilly country of eastern Chongqing, in the region of ridges and valleys north of the Yangtze. The terrain dictates the map: streets follow the shape of the valley, roads curve along hillsides, and the built-up area stretches where the ground is level enough to build on.
Around the town the slopes are shaped into terraces and small fields, with villages and farmhouses scattered across the hills. Rather than a grid, the result is a pattern of winding roads and irregular clusters, typical of the mountain towns of this part of south-western China.
