Te mapa
Galway grew where the River Corrib drops its short, fast course from Lough Corrib into Galway Bay. From above, the river divides the city in two, crossed by a handful of bridges, while mill races and the Eglinton Canal thread through the western bank. The medieval core, with Shop Street and Quay Street running down toward the water, forms a tight knot of narrow lanes on the eastern side.
Beyond the old town, the Claddagh sits across the river at its mouth, and the long promenade at Salthill follows the shoreline westward. The University of Galway campus lies upstream along the riverbank. The city was a European Capital of Culture in 2020, a title that reflected its long reputation for music, theatre and festivals.
A Galway map poster lays out this geography cleanly: the river's short run to the sea, the curve of the bay, the dense medieval street pattern and the newer suburbs fanning out to the east and west. In black and white, the relationship between water and town is especially easy to read.

Shop Street, Quay Street and their side lanes form a compact medieval grid near the river, a dense cluster of short streets at the heart of the map.
West of the Claddagh, the seafront promenade traces the edge of Galway Bay in a long, smooth line that marks the city's southern boundary with the Atlantic.
