Te mapa
Gaoliang lies in the steep, folded country of north-eastern Chongqing, a municipality where flat land is scarce and every settlement has to negotiate with the terrain. From above, the town's roads follow contours and valley floors, and buildings cluster where the ground allows, leaving terraced fields and wooded ridges to fill the spaces between.
This part of Chongqing belongs to the wider Yangtze basin, and the rivers and gorges of the region have shaped how towns like this one grew and how they connect to the outside. Little of Gaoliang's layout stays straight for long; roads loop and switch back, and the result on paper is an organic, almost hand-drawn line.
A Gaoliang map poster captures that improvised geometry. Rather than blocks and avenues, it shows a network adapted to hills, with a denser centre where the valley opens and thinner threads reaching into the surrounding countryside. It is an unusual subject for a wall, and a telling one for anyone who knows the place.
Streets trace the lie of the land, curving around hillsides and along valleys. On the poster they read as flowing lines rather than a rigid grid.
Where the ground is gentlest, buildings and lanes pack tightly together, forming the darker heart of the composition against the lighter hillsides around it.
Beyond the town, the map picks up the fine tracks and field boundaries of cultivated slopes, a delicate pattern characteristic of rural Chongqing.

For people with roots in rural Chongqing who now live in the city or overseas, a map of the home town is a personal thing. It holds a place that is hard to describe to others but instantly recognisable in outline.
