Garoowe is the capital of Puntland, in northeastern Somalia, and the main town of the Nugaal region. It sits in the Nugaal valley, a broad, dry landscape of open plains and seasonal watercourses. From above, the town is spread out and low, with wide streets and plots across flat ground and very little to interrupt the view.
Garoowe has grown considerably as the seat of Puntland's government institutions, and its street network reflects that expansion, with newer neighbourhoods laid out around the older centre and along the main roads.
