Te mapa
Gorodets stands on the left bank of the Volga, upstream of Nizhny Novgorod, where the river widens into the Gorky Reservoir. The town follows the bank, so its main streets run roughly parallel to the water with shorter lanes dropping toward the shore. From above it forms a long, narrow settlement with the broad river filling one side of the sheet.
It is one of the oldest towns in the region, traditionally dated to the twelfth century, and Alexander Nevsky died here in 1263 on his way home from the Horde. Gorodets is also known for its style of folk painting on wood, bright flowers and horsemen that gave the town its name in Russian decorative art. Earthen ramparts of the early fortress still mark the historic centre.
A Gorodets map poster makes the most of the river. The water occupies a large, calm area of the composition, while the town gathers along its edge in a band of low-rise blocks and wooden-house streets. The remains of the old ramparts and the lanes running down to the bank give the plan a clear historic heart without crowding the design.
The town runs along the left bank of the Volga for several kilometres, and the wide water surface forms the dominant shape of any map of Gorodets.
Remnants of the medieval fortress walls survive as raised earthworks near the centre, visible on the map as a curved outline among the streets.
Downstream, the dam of the Gorky Reservoir crosses the Volga, turning the river above it into a broad lake-like expanse beside the town.

Koteā ko Gorodets
Gorodets appeals to people who know the upper Volga, who collect old Russian towns, or who grew up with its painted woodwork. The river and the long bank-side plan make a calm, readable image for a hallway or study.
